The shamisen is a musical instrument of traditional Japan. Women from the pleasure quarters playing the shamisen are the subject of numerous woodblock prints by famous print artists of the Edo period (1600-1868). Yet the instrument also exists in contemporary culture where it has a role transmitting both historical and modern music styles.
