German oboist and violinist Sebastian Bodinus (1700-1759) might today be almost completely forgotten if not for his Musicalischen Divertissiments ? a six-part collection of ensemble sonatas that was published by the Leopold family in Ausburg and issued between 1726 and 1730. Part III of the Musicalischen Divertissiments (1728) comprises six trio sonatas for oboe, violin and basso?an almost inevitable combination, given that Bodinus began his career as an oboist before effectively setting the instrument aside in favour of the violin. These works promulgate the sonata model established in Part I of the Musicalischen Divertissiments: fundamentally sonate da chiesa, yet several introduce dance movements foreign to the Corellian prototype, including the menuet, bourrée and siciliana, while others feature imitative movements entitled ?fuga?. Given the scarcity of trio-sonata sets written specifically for oboe, violin and continuo, the publication of this first modern edition of Part III should be welcomed by performers on these instruments.
